Orthopaedic Advice For Shoulder Pain

Do you feel sharp pain radiating from your shoulders? Is it disabling you from carrying out daily activities properly? Many people suffering from the condition disregard the need for treatment, and expect the pain to just fade away. However, this is rarely the case, and prolonging the condition may lead to more pain and suffering.


The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint. It is composed of four tendons, known as the rotator cuff, which allows for this wide range of motion. Most reported cases of shoulder pain occur when the rotator cuff tendons move under the bony region of the shoulder. The tendons becomes swollen, which is medically referred to as rotator cuff tendinitis.

Pain in the shoulder may also come as a symptom to more serious conditions, such as arthritis and bursitis. Dislocated shoulder or broken shoulder bone from physical activity, such as a contact sport or weightlifting, may also cause pain. Some cases of shoulder pain may be caused by a problem from another body part like the lungs. This is known as referred pain and there is usually no discomfort when moving the shoulder.

Home Treatment

Orthopaedic surgeons suggest putting ice on the shoulder area for at least 15 minutes, and then leaving it off for another 15 minutes. Repeat the procedure 3 to 4 times per day for 3 days. Make sure to wrap the ice in fabric to prevent skin damage and frostbite. After 3 days, rest your shoulder and try to slowly transition to your regular routine. Guidance from a physical therapist may be required to help you do the activities safely. Medication including ibuprofen and acetaminophen may be given to lessen swelling and pain.


Orthopaedic experts advice people with shoulder pain to limit their physical activity at least until the pain has completely subsided. If you have had pain in the shoulders before, apply ice and take ibuprofen following your workout session.

Learn strength exercises that target your shoulder muscles and rotator cuff. A physical therapist or physician can recommend such program. If you have had rotator cuff tendinitis before, routinely perform range-of-motion exercises to prevent your shoulders from freezing again.
